The pylon is the vertical suspension structure on the aircraft used to mount external equipment such as engines and weapons. It is aerodynamically designed to fit the configuration of specific aircraft so as to create the least amount of drag while providing a means of attaching fuel tanks, bombs, rockets, torpedoes, rocket motors, or machine-gun pods.
Access to the pylon is critical for maintenance, inspections, component replacements, troubleshooting, and munitions personnel. Our Adjustable Height Pylon Stand provides a unique solution to this challenging fall safety concern. This saves on climbing time and offers potential health and safety benefits when compared to existing techniques. Rather than suspending a platform next to the work area, our Pylon Access Stand allows greater flexibility, enabling the crew to work on one pylon and then easily roll the platform to the next working area.
The stands were designed in aluminum to reduce weight, and utilize a curved platform to cantilever over the engine and allow personnel to lean comfortably and safely over the pylon, offering fall protection on both sides by means of 38 ¾” long handrails. The platform has high density rubber bumpers across vertical members, providing excellent aircraft protection.
The curved platform is manufactured from smooth aluminum sheet to provide a comfortable leaning surface. 16” extendable railings at the end of the cantilever lean-on platform utilize pin locks at the extended length for added security. Drain holes are added to all railings to prevent cracking due to ice forming inside.
Six 36”W grip strut safety tread steps at a 60º angle and a 90º telescoping ladder lead up to the 36”W by 28”L platform. The working platform elevates 40’’ via a hydraulic hand pump and may be secured in 1’’ increments. 36”H handrails on both sides of the platform feature 5” of adjustability to avoid contact with aircraft and obstructions.
Our maintenance stands provide unlimited access to the pylon, wing and empennage area. A 12” platform at a 30º angle with diamond plate tread is provided at the bottom of the curved platform to provide a stable footrest for maintenance personnel, while offering added drainage for inclement weather.
A removable 8” extension piece with a rubber bumper underneath provides additional access at the top of the curved lean-on platform, and stores underneath the frame while not in use. For added protection, additional 6 inch drop-in step locations are located at 13” and 9” above the platform at a 56º angle for working with the extension piece. Both additional platforms pin and lock safely into place.
Two 8” swivel and two 8” rigid polyurethane on aluminum casters provide excellent maneuverability. Two bulldog trailer jacks are stabilize the platform for leveling. The stands pictured were customized for A320 and 757 aircraft, but we can design a Pylon Access Stand customized to your facility's needs.
